Six Killed in Cargo Ropeway Collapse at Pavagadh’s Shakti Peeth in Gujarat

On Saturday, September 6, 2025, tragedy struck near the revered Mahakali Mata Temple on Pavagadh Hill, Gujarat, when a cable of a cargo ropeway collapsed during maintenance operations. The incident claimed the lives of six individuals, according to local authorities.

The cargo ropeway, situated in Panchmahal district and used to transport materials to the hilltop temple complex, reportedly failed when its cable snapped, causing fatal consequences. Rescue and relief efforts were immediately mobilized, with police and fire brigade teams swiftly responding to the scene.  A video captured shortly after the accident shows the collapsed ropeway carriage amidst rescue operations amid adverse weather conditions.

District officials have ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. The state has also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and announced compensation, while emphasizing a review of safety protocols for ropeway operations.

Pavagadh Hill—home to the Kalika Mata Temple, one of the holiest Shakti Peethas—is a prominent pilgrimage destination within the Champaner–Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ropeway, installed in 1986 and operated by Usha Breco Limited, spans approximately 740–774 meters and is one of India’s highest cable systems, capable of transporting hundreds of passengers per hour. This incident recalls a devastating mishap in January 2003, when a similar failure resulted in seven fatalities and multiple injuries.
