Major Setback: Ravichandran Ashwin Goes Unsold in ILT20 Auction After Career Moves

In a surprising turn of events, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin—recently retired from the Indian Premier League—remained unsold in the International League T20 (ILT20) Season 4 auction, dealing a blow to his aspirations in franchise cricket.

Ashwin, who announced his IPL retirement recently, was listed under the USD 120,000 base price bracket in the auction. Despite his illustrious career and experience, no franchise opted to bid for him during the proceedings. Each team was allotted a budget of USD 800,000 for auction purchases, supplemented by any unspent funds from prior direct signings and retentions. Yet Ashwin’s name failed to attract any attention when his turn arrived.

This disappointment comes months after Ashwin signed with the Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). His BBL contract signals his continued ambition to compete in overseas T20 leagues now that he is no longer tied by IPL/Board restrictions.

Ashwin’s decision to step away from the IPL opened doors for him to participate in franchise tournaments across the globe. He had also expressed interest in ILT20, registering ahead of the September nomination deadline with expectations of being picked. Despite those hopes, he remained unsold when the gavel fell.

For Ashwin, this auction result poses important career questions. As a highly experienced spinner with deep knowledge of conditions and game situations, his unsold status in ILT20 suggests that franchises may be prioritizing younger talent, budget constraints, or strategic team composition over marquee names.

His BBL signing provides some consolation and a platform to remain active in T20 cricket. But the ILT20 outcome will require him to reassess his path in the rapidly evolving landscape of global franchise cricket—one in which legacy and reputation are increasingly balanced against fresh talent and cost dynamics.
