The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strongly reacted to the trophy controversy that marred India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph in Dubai. After the Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and Pakistan minister Mohsin Naqvi, the post-match ceremony ended in chaos. Now, the BCCI has issued a sharp statement condemning Naqvi’s actions and demanding the immediate return of the trophy and medals.
Trophy Snub Sparks Outrage
India defeated Pakistan in a tense final to claim their third Asia Cup title against their arch-rivals. However, when Naqvi stepped forward to present the trophy, Indian players stood their ground and declined to receive it from him. The move triggered loud cheers from Indian supporters but also brought the presentation to a standstill.

According to reports, instead of handing over the trophy through another official, Naqvi walked away with both the cup and the medals meant for the Indian team. This act has been described as “unsportsmanlike” and “unprecedented” by Indian cricket administrators.
BCCI Secretary Issues Strong Statement
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia criticized Naqvi for his post-match conduct, saying:
“India made it very clear that the team would not accept the trophy from Mr. Naqvi. That does not mean the gentleman should take the trophy and medals, which belong to our country, into his hotel room. We demand that he return them immediately. Let some semblance of morality prevail.”
Saikia also confirmed that the BCCI would take up the matter at the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting if the issue is not resolved.
India’s Stand on Principle
Despite the absence of the official trophy lift, Indian players did not boycott individual awards. Tilak Varma collected the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 69, while Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Tournament. However, the team made it clear that their refusal to accept the main trophy was a matter of principle, not a rejection of the tournament itself.
The Indian players have also expressed solidarity with the BCCI’s stance, emphasizing that cricket should not be allowed to become a platform for political posturing.
Wider Impact on Asian Cricket
The row has raised questions about governance within the ACC and the neutrality of its office bearers. Cricket experts believe this incident will push for stricter protocols on trophy presentations in future tournaments to avoid politicization.
For now, India’s emphatic victory on the field stands as a statement of sporting excellence, while the controversy has added an extra layer of political symbolism to the win. The BCCI’s strong stand signals that it will not let cricket’s governing bodies ignore India’s voice on issues of fairness and respect.
