New York: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday stated that he believes India is “mostly” aligned with Kyiv in the ongoing conflict with Russia, offering a perspective that contrasts with US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.
Speaking to Fox News on the sidelines of UNGA, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of strengthening ties with India, particularly on energy-related matters, and stressed the need to ensure India’s continued support for Ukraine.
“I think India is mostly with us. We have these questions with energy, but with Europeans we can make closer and stronger relations with India,” Zelenskyy said. He also noted that engaging China is more challenging due to Beijing’s historical alignment with Russia.
Praising Trump’s commitment, Zelenskyy said the US has shown willingness to support Ukraine until the conflict ends, contrasting this with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims of victory despite setbacks.
Meanwhile, Trump had labeled India and China as “primary funders” of Russia’s war by continuing to purchase Russian oil, announcing additional tariffs on India.
India has rejected the tariffs as “unjustified and unreasonable,” emphasizing its right to safeguard national interests and economic security.
