Super Typhoon Ragasa Batters Southern China, Taiwan & Philippines; Millions Evacuated

Super Typhoon Ragasa, one of the most powerful storms of the year, has wreaked havoc across southern China and neighboring regions, forcing the evacuation of millions of residents.

The storm, packing winds of nearly 200 km/h, has caused widespread disruption, flooding, and infrastructure damage as it lashes China, Taiwan, and the Philippines with relentless rain and fierce winds.

In China’s Guangdong province, over a million people have been relocated to safer areas as authorities warned of storm surges and flash floods.

Schools, offices, and businesses in more than ten cities have been closed as a precaution. In Shenzhen alone, nearly 400,000 residents were evacuated, while rail and air travel came to a standstill, with hundreds of flights canceled.

Before making landfall in China, Ragasa devastated Taiwan’s Hualien County, where at least 14 people were killed in flash floods triggered by torrential rain. In the Philippines, the storm battered northern Luzon, claiming 10 lives and displacing thousands into emergency shelters.

Dramatic visuals circulating online show massive waves crashing along coastal areas, uprooted trees blocking roads, and roofs being torn off buildings, shared a striking video of Ragasa hitting Hong Kong, reporting over 700 flight cancellations and citywide shutdowns that led to panic buying in supermarkets.

Meteorologists have classified Ragasa as a super typhoon, raising concerns about further destruction of power lines, farmland, and infrastructure as it moves inland.

Emergency teams are on high alert, and authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, stock up on essentials, and follow all safety advisories until the storm passes.
