Guwahati: Thousands of grieving fans gathered at Kamarkuchi Village in Sonapur on Tuesday, September 23, as legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg was laid to rest with full state honours. The cremation ceremony turned into an emotional farewell, with tearful tributes pouring in from across the state.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju attended the funeral on behalf of the central government, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited the cremation ground to pay his respects.

Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 in Singapore while scuba diving, leaving the entire nation in shock. His mortal remains were flown from Singapore to Delhi and then transported to Guwahati on Sunday morning, where thousands of fans lined up to catch a last glimpse of the iconic singer.

Heartbreaking visuals of fans mourning have gone viral on social media, underlining the deep impact of his loss on Assamese and Indian music lovers.

Zubeen had travelled to Singapore to participate in the Northeast India Festival. According to festival organisers, he experienced breathing difficulties during a scuba diving session, which led to his untimely death.

In response to growing allegations of foul play, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a fresh post-mortem of Zubeen’s body to ensure complete transparency in the investigation.

The autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Tuesday morning at Guwahati Medical College under the supervision of a team from AIIMS Guwahati, with full consent from Zubeen Garg’s family.

“This step is being taken in response to public demand and to ensure complete transparency in the investigation,” CM Sarma said, assuring fans that every aspect of the case will be thoroughly examined.
