Kathmandu: Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki is set to expand her cabinet this evening with the induction of seven new ministers, officials from the President’s Office confirmed. Details regarding the portfolios and responsibilities of the new ministers are yet to be officially disclosed.
The cabinet expansion comes as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate the interim government following the Gen-Z-led political movement that transformed Nepal’s landscape in early September.
The movement, which led to the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, claimed 74 lives when police used lethal force against protesters.
Earlier in the day, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava met with Kulman Ghising, Minister for Energy, Urban Development, and Physical Infrastructure, at Singha Durbar, reaffirming India’s support for Nepal’s infrastructure and energy development.
Ghising highlighted India’s strategic role in Nepal’s development and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation during this transitional period.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held a telephonic conversation last week with interim PM Sushila Karki, who was sworn in on 12 September.
The 73-year-old former Chief Justice of Nepal, now the country’s first female Prime Minister, was endorsed by protesters for her integrity and independence. She will serve as interim PM until the first week of March 2026, when elections are scheduled to select Nepal’s next executive head.
The September protests, led primarily by Gen-Z youth activists, were triggered by public frustration over corruption, lack of accountability, and a government ban on social media.
Karki’s cabinet expansion is viewed as a key step in stabilizing the government while addressing the aspirations of the youth and ensuring governance during the transitional phase.
