New Delhi: A Delhi Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been suspended following allegations of molestation and abuse of power against a young woman from the Northeast in the Maharani Bagh area on Saturday, September 13.
The accused, identified as ASI Virandar Kumar of Ashram Police Station, allegedly entered a shop near Ashram Metro Station around 10 a.m. and conducted an unauthorised search for alcohol without a warrant.
According to eyewitnesses, after failing to find anything illegal, Kumar allegedly assaulted the woman, grabbed her face, and inappropriately touched her private parts.
The incident came to light after a user named yarsho_naga_forever_21 posted details and photos of the accused officer on Instagram, sparking outrage online.
Social media users flooded platforms with the hashtag #JusticeForOurNortheastSister, demanding strict action.
Following formal complaints by the victim’s family, student unions, and community activists, senior police officials including the Station House Officer and the Superintendent reportedly suspended the ASI pending a detailed investigation.
However, protesters and community leaders are demanding Kumar’s dismissal from service and criminal prosecution under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for molestation and abuse of authority. They plan to continue talks with police officials on Monday to push for stronger legal action.
The Delhi Police has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
