Nagpur: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday stated that tariffs on Indian goods have been imposed by other nations out of fear of a stronger India.
Speaking at the 7th foundation day of Brahma Kumaris Vishwa Samiti Sarovar, Bhagwat emphasized that global problems require a shift from a self-centered approach to one of “belongingness” and understanding of the true self. He suggested that overcoming fear and fostering compassion could lead to a world without enemies.
Bhagwat referred to recent “reciprocal tariffs” imposed by the US on Indian exports, particularly citing India’s oil imports from Russia during the Ukraine crisis, and claimed that these measures—some reaching up to 50%—were driven by apprehension that India’s growth could challenge other nations’ global standing.
He noted that India has not engaged in any aggressive actions, yet still faces trade barriers. Bhagwat highlighted that unless individuals and nations recognize their true selves, fear will continue to shape international relations and create conflicts.
He further observed that a narrow “me-first” approach has hindered global problem-solving and stressed that India could lead by example by positioning itself as a cooperative “friend” rather than a domineering “guru” to the world.
Bhagwat’s remarks underline his call for a broader vision, compassion, and brotherhood as essential tools for overcoming fear and fostering international cooperation.
