CP Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, has been elected as the Vice President of India after securing 452 votes in a closely fought contest against the Opposition’s candidate, B. Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. A veteran BJP leader and former Maharashtra Governor, Radhakrishnan’s victory marks a significant milestone in his decades-long public service career.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Radhakrishnan, highlighting his vast experience in public life and expressing confidence that his leadership would contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded Radhakrishnan’s dedication to empowering marginalised communities, describing him as an “outstanding Vice President” who would strengthen Constitutional values and enrich parliamentary discourse.

Union leaders too expressed their delight over the result. Home Minister Amit Shah praised Radhakrishnan’s administrative experience and commitment to serving the marginalised, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended his humility and integrity, stating that the Rajya Sabha would achieve new heights under his leadership.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that Radhakrishnan’s long-standing dedication to democratic values would enhance India’s voice nationally and globally. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed special pride, noting that a Mumbai voter had been elected Vice President, and thanked the NDA for its united support.

From the Opposition, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated Radhakrishnan but emphasised that the election symbolised a battle of ideologies, underscoring the Opposition’s commitment to protecting India’s Constitution and democratic traditions. B. Sudershan Reddy, the Opposition candidate, accepted the result with grace, affirming his faith in India’s democratic process and extending his best wishes to Radhakrishnan.

Radhakrishnan won by a margin of 152 votes, surpassing the required majority of 377 first-preference votes. His victory, backed by ruling coalition members and independents, underscores broad parliamentary support.

As Vice President of India, he will play a crucial role in shaping parliamentary traditions and strengthening the democratic framework of the nation.
