Kathmandu, September 09: Nepal is grappling with a severe political and social crisis as massive nationwide protests escalate following Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s resignation. The protests, largely driven by the “Gen-Z” movement against corruption, nepotism, and political mismanagement, have turned violent, with demonstrations reported across Kathmandu and other major cities.
A viral video shows Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel being chased and brutally assaulted by a mob on a narrow street. In the footage, Paudel is seen running for his life as protesters strike him with kicks and punches, eventually dragging him and manhandling him in the street. Another video reportedly shows him stripped down to his underwear while being dragged amid the chaos.
The protests erupted after the government initially banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube. Although the government later reversed the order, public anger had already intensified.
Amid the unrest, the protesters set fire to Prime Minister Oli’s residence in Bhaktapur, the official residence of President Ram Chandra Paudel, and even parts of the Parliament building. Streets were filled with burning vehicles and thick black smoke.
Social media reports suggest that PM Oli may have fled the country via helicopter, though this remains unconfirmed. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as violence spreads and security concerns escalate across Nepal.
