Kathmandu: Nepal witnessed massive unrest as lakhs of young people took to the streets to protest the government’s recent ban on social media platforms. The demonstrations, popularly dubbed the ‘Gen Z protests’, turned violent, leading to the death of at least nine people and leaving more than 80 injured after police opened fire on crowds in Damak.

The ban, which came into effect on September 4, 2025, targeted popular global platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X, and YouTube, as they had not registered with the Nepalese government. Widely used by the youth for communication and sharing ideas, the restrictions quickly triggered mass anger across the country.
Protesters stormed Nepal’s Parliament and clashed with police in several parts of the capital, Kathmandu. The city’s District Administration Office imposed a curfew as security forces struggled to control the situation. Despite the restrictions, demonstrators managed to block the army’s movement in some areas, escalating the crisis further.

Violence spread to New Baneshwar, where several more protesters suffered gunshot wounds. Emergency medical stations were set up in Maitighar, while hospitals including Everest and Civil treated scores of injured demonstrators.
The widespread protests underline the growing resentment among Nepal’s youth, who see the government’s decision as a direct attack on freedom of expression and digital rights. The situation remains tense as security forces continue to patrol key areas to prevent further escalation.
