Delhi Rains Cause NH-44 Cave-In Near Alipur, Yamuna River Above Danger Mark

New Delhi: Heavy rains continued to batter the national capital for the third straight day on Wednesday, causing widespread disruption. Amid the downpour, a section of National Highway 44 near Alipur police station caved in around 6 am, creating chaos for commuters.

Visuals from the site showed a damaged auto-rickshaw near the collapsed portion. The driver, who sustained injuries after the vehicle got stuck in the pit, was rushed to a hospital. Police quickly reached the spot, diverting traffic on the busy highway to prevent further mishaps.

Delhi and the surrounding NCR region, including Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad, have been witnessing incessant showers, leading to severe waterlogging and traffic jams. On Thursday morning, the rising water level of the Yamuna River added to the city’s troubles as floodwaters entered homes in low-lying areas. Authorities evacuated residents and cattle from inundated zones.

The Yamuna continued to flow above the danger mark, with water levels recorded at 207.48 metres at the Old Railway Bridge at 7 am. Floodwater also entered the underpass near Delhi Secretariat, further worsening the situation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in Delhi and nearby regions. Airlines also flagged concerns, with SpiceJet issuing a travel advisory urging passengers to check flight statuses as departures and arrivals at Delhi airport were impacted by bad weather.
