Lucknow: After 171 years of service, India’s iconic registered post has been discontinued from September 1, marking the end of an era in the country’s postal history.
Introduced during the British period, registered post was synonymous with trust and reliability, used widely for government orders, court notices, bank correspondence, and personal letters. Senders received an acknowledgment slip (AD card), ensuring peace of mind that letters had reached the intended recipients.
With the decline in demand due to digital communication platforms like email, WhatsApp, and instant messaging, the postal department decided to merge registered post with Speed Post, a faster, trackable, and more reliable service.
Speed Post is now available at over 250 post offices in the Lucknow division, with charges varying by distance and weight. While sending a 20–50 gram letter up to 200 km now costs Rs 41.30, the benefits of guaranteed delivery and end-to-end tracking outweigh the higher cost.
Senior Superintendent Sachin Choubey highlighted that the merger aims to provide faster delivery for people while saving time. Retired government employees, lawyers, and students reminisce about the trust and assurance associated with registered post, recalling how it played a vital role in pensions, legal notices, and admission letters.
As registered post quietly exits after 171 years, it leaves behind a legacy of reliability, now replaced by Speed Post, which promises efficiency, traceability, and faster service for the modern era.
