Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Deploying 500 Teams to Remove Voter Names at TMCP Foundation Day

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government on Thursday, alleging a conspiracy to strip citizens of their voting rights. Speaking at the foundation day celebration of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) on Mayo Road in Kolkata, she claimed that the Centre is planning to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) under the guise of the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

“The BJP has deployed over 500 teams in West Bengal to conduct surveys aimed at deleting names from the state’s electoral rolls. I urge everyone to check whether your names are still on the list and ensure you have your Aadhaar cards. I will not allow anyone to take away people’s voting rights as long as I am alive,” Mamata said.

The Trinamool Congress chief also accused the Election Commission of intimidating state officers by issuing unnecessary instructions. “The Commission’s jurisdiction applies during elections, not throughout the year. Their real motive is to implement NRC through voter list revision. I will never allow that,” she added.

Taking a swipe at the BJP without naming anyone, Mamata alleged that films are being financed to malign Bengal, indirectly referring to Vivek Agnihotri’s film The Bengal Files, whose trailer launch was recently halted by Kolkata Police. “Movies are being made with money to defame Bengal. The BJP wants people to forget the contribution of Bengalis to the freedom movement. We will not tolerate such linguistic terror,” she said.

She further accused the CPI(M)-led Left of aligning with the BJP to challenge Trinamool Congress. “The CPI(M) government in Kerala is saying that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose fled the country fearing the British. We condemn this. They have joined hands with the BJP to take us on,” she remarked.

Mamata also criticized opposition parties for moving courts to block government decisions, blaming them for delays in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination results. “You cannot defeat us politically, so you are fighting through the back door by stalling appointments in courts,” she stated.

In a significant announcement, the Chief Minister revealed she is writing a book on Prime Ministers she has worked with during her political career. “I will release it at the International Kolkata Book Fair next year. The country needs to know,” she said.

Additionally, she claimed that Burdwan University’s Vice Chancellor, appointed by the Governor, had stopped research funding, but she intervened to restore it.
