50% US Tariffs on Indian Goods Come Into Effect, Exporters Face Huge Setback

Washington: A new wave of U.S. tariffs on Indian goods took effect on Wednesday at 9:30 AM IST, doubling the total import duty to 50 percent across a broad range of products. The tariff hike, enforced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is expected to significantly impact Indian exporters, particularly those operating in labor-intensive sectors.

Trade analysts warn that this sharp increase in tariffs could disrupt supply chains and strain bilateral trade relations between the two nations. The move is seen as part of a broader U.S. trade policy shift that aims to protect domestic industries while applying economic pressure on countries with strategic differences.

Indian exporters are bracing for substantial losses, as the 50 percent duty is likely to reduce the competitiveness of their products in the American market. Key sectors such as textiles, handicrafts, and certain agricultural products are expected to bear the brunt of the increased tariff rate.
