The United States has announced the imposition of an additional 25% tariff on imports from India, effective from August 27, 2025, at 12:01 am EDT (9:30 am IST), according to the Department of Homeland Security. The new tariffs will apply to all Indian-origin goods entering the US for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses after the deadline. A detailed annex accompanying the notification lists the specific duty rates applicable to these imports.
This latest move comes as part of an escalating trade standoff between Washington and New Delhi. Former President Donald Trump had earlier warned of imposing additional tariffs unless India reduced its dependence on Russian oil, claiming that such purchases indirectly finance the conflict in Ukraine. The new duties follow previous tariffs imposed before the August 1 deadline for reciprocal measures.
The next round of US-India trade talks, initially scheduled for August 25, has been postponed indefinitely, signaling growing uncertainty in bilateral trade relations.
Reacting to the development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured citizens during an event in Ahmedabad that India’s core interests would remain protected. He emphasized that the government stands firmly with farmers, small entrepreneurs, and livestock rearers, ensuring their livelihoods will not be compromised by external pressures.
Meanwhile, industry bodies representing US-India trade have reportedly urged the White House to delay the tariff enforcement by 90 days, according to report.
The appeal argues that such a pause would allow space for renewed negotiations and potentially prevent further escalation. Sources suggest that India has already increased its purchases of American oil, reducing reliance on Russian crude. Advocates claim that postponing the tariffs could create a “win-win” scenario by preserving trade stability and opening doors for diplomatic solutions.
