PM Modi To Visit China For SCO Summit From August 31, 2025

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Japan and China from August 29 to September 1, 2025, according to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday. At the invitation of Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi will first travel to Japan on August 29-30 to participate in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit.

Following his visit to Japan, PM Modi will visit China from August 31 to September 1 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. This will be his first official visit to China since June 2019.

The announcement comes shortly after the United States imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports and threatened to further increase tariffs due to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil, accusing India of supporting the “Russian war machine.”

China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, stated that PM Modi’s visit to Tianjin would provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations and serve as a significant event for the SCO. Reports also suggest that PM Modi may hold informal discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.
