Assam Suspends Aadhaar Issuance for Adults Except SC, ST, and Tea Garden Workers

The Assam Cabinet has decided to suspend the issuance of new Aadhaar cards for individuals above 18 years of age for one year, except for those belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and tea garden communities. The decision aims to prevent illegal foreigners from obtaining Aadhaar cards and falsely claiming Indian citizenship.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that those from other castes who have not yet applied for Aadhaar can do so within September. Beyond this period, no applications will be accepted unless there are exceptional circumstances. In such cases, the District Commissioner (DC) will have the authority to approve Aadhaar issuance after verification reports from the Special Branch and Foreigners Tribunal.

“We have continuously pushed back Bangladeshi nationals along the border. This decision ensures that no illegal foreigner can obtain an Aadhaar card in Assam,” Sarma said.

In addition, the Cabinet approved the allocation of 3,14,773 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for new beneficiaries. The government also announced a major plantation drive in 12,000 bighas of land at Uriamghat, following recent eviction drives.

Sarma also expressed gratitude to the Union Government for approving an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) for Assam, which will be located at Palasbari and mentored by IIM Ahmedabad. This will be the second IIM in the Northeast and the 22nd in the country.

On social media platform X, the Chief Minister supported the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, stating that it enhances transparency by mandating bail within 30 days for arrested ministers, including the Prime Minister or Chief Minister.
