New Delhi: The man who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing has been identified as Rajesh Sakriya, a 41-year-old resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. According to his mother, Bhanu, Rajesh is a dog lover and was deeply upset over the Supreme Court’s recent directive to round up stray dogs in Delhi NCR and move them to shelters.
Reports suggest that Sakriya attended the public meeting seeking the Chief Minister’s help regarding the arrest of a relative. Eyewitnesses said he approached Rekha Gupta with some documents but suddenly began yelling and then launched an attack. Some witnesses claimed he appeared intoxicated, although this has not been confirmed by authorities.
Security personnel immediately restrained Sakriya, and he is currently being interrogated by Delhi Police to determine the motive behind the incident. The attack occurred during a ‘Jansunwai’ session at the Chief Minister’s residence this morning, where she was listening to citizens’ grievances.
The BJP has hinted at a possible political conspiracy, with Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa alleging that rivals cannot tolerate the CM’s work on the ground. Meanwhile, AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi strongly condemned the attack, stating, “There is no place for violence in a democracy. The strictest action should be taken against the culprits.”
Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh will personally oversee the inquiry into this major security lapse. Officials are investigating what led to the attack and whether there was any larger conspiracy involved.
