Putin Calls PM Modi After Trump Meeting, Discusses Ukraine Conflict and Bilateral Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, just days after his high-profile meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska to discuss ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance on the conflict, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution. He assured that India would extend full support toward achieving this goal.

The leaders also discussed issues related to bilateral cooperation and agreed to maintain close communication going forward. Following the conversation, PM Modi shared an update on X, thanking President Putin for his call and for sharing details of his discussion with Trump. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace efforts and expressed hope for continued engagement with Russia in the coming days.

This interaction follows a detailed phone conversation the two leaders had 10 days ago, before Putin’s Alaska summit with Trump. That discussion touched upon global trade challenges, including the uncertainty caused by the US imposing a 25% penalty tariff on Indian goods due to Delhi’s continued purchase of discounted Russian crude oil. Trump claimed these imports were indirectly funding the war in Ukraine — a conflict he previously vowed to end with a single phone call, a promise yet unfulfilled.

India strongly countered the tariff decision, highlighting that wealthier Western nations can afford costlier energy sources, whereas developing countries like India must prioritize affordable energy for billions of people.

Notably, Putin’s call to Modi came just hours before Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was not invited to the Alaska summit, prepared to meet Trump at the White House. Zelenskyy will be joined by key European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, in an effort to push for Ukraine’s position in ongoing diplomatic efforts.
