The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has named Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its official nominee for the post of Vice President of India, ahead of the election scheduled for August 21, 2025. The announcement was made by BJP national president and Union Minister JP Nadda, who highlighted Radhakrishnan’s long-standing service, political maturity, and the respect he commands across communities, especially in Tamil Nadu.
“We are in talks with opposition leaders to try and reach a consensus. Our aim is to ensure a smooth, unopposed election for the Vice President’s post,” said Nadda. “CP Radhakrishnan is NDA’s unanimous choice — a leader with integrity, administrative depth, and a long record of service to the nation.”
Early Political Journey
Born and raised in Tamil Nadu, CP Radhakrishnan began his political journey with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a period when the party was still finding its footing in the southern states. A committed party worker, Radhakrishnan gained a reputation for being deeply connected to grassroots politics, building a strong organizational structure for the BJP in Tamil Nadu.
His first major breakthrough came in 1998, when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore, a constituency traditionally dominated by regional parties. He repeated this success in 1999, becoming one of the rare BJP leaders to secure consecutive wins in Tamil Nadu. During his time in Parliament, he served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Textiles, reflecting his expertise in one of Tamil Nadu’s core industries.
Key Roles and Movements
From 2004 to 2007, Radhakrishnan served as the President of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit. It was during this tenure that he undertook a 19,000 km-long ‘Ratha Yatra’, which lasted 93 days. The Yatra was not just a symbolic political move — it was a mission to raise awareness on key national issues. His campaign called for the interlinking of Indian rivers, uniform civil code, eradication of untouchability, combatting drug abuse, and fighting terrorism.
Beyond the Ratha Yatra, Radhakrishnan also led two Padayatras, engaging with citizens on issues of development, justice, and national security. His ability to connect with people at the ground level, even in regions where the BJP lacked a strong base, set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
Governance and Administrative Experience
Radhakrishnan’s career took a significant turn in February 2023, when he was appointed the Governor of Jharkhand. His tenure was marked by a no-nonsense administrative style and an ability to work across party lines. Recognizing his leadership capabilities, the President of India entrusted him with additional responsibilities, making him the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry for a brief period.
In July 2024, CP Radhakrishnan took oath as the Governor of Maharashtra, one of India’s most politically and economically significant states. His administrative acumen, ability to handle coalition dynamics, and consistent focus on constitutional duties made him a respected figure among both allies and opposition.
Symbolic and Strategic Importance
Radhakrishnan’s nomination as the Vice Presidential candidate is not just a personal milestone — it is also a strategic move by the NDA. His deep roots in South India, especially Tamil Nadu, could help the alliance expand its influence in a region traditionally dominated by regional parties like the DMK and AIADMK.
Moreover, his clean image, years of public service, and balanced political approach offer a contrast in an increasingly polarized political climate. His potential elevation to the Vice President’s office, which also serves as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, could bring a blend of firmness and neutrality to India’s Upper House of Parliament.
