Harbhajan Singh Urges India to Boycott Pakistan Clash in Asia Cup 2025 After Pahalgam Attack

As the Asia Cup 2025 prepares to kick off in the UAE on September 9, the highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan has already sparked intense debate. This would mark the first meeting between the two cricketing rivals since the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in April, which claimed several innocent lives and escalated tensions between the neighboring nations.

In the wake of these developments, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has made a strong appeal for India to skip the match against Pakistan, stating that engaging in cricket with a nation linked to such tragic events would dishonor the memory of fallen Indian soldiers.

Speaking to the Times of India, Harbhajan emphasized the need to prioritize national sentiment over sport. “Our soldiers guard the borders, often sacrificing their lives. Their service and sacrifice are far more significant than any cricket match,” he said. He further echoed the government’s stance, quoting, ‘Khoon aur paani ek saath nahi beh sakte’ — meaning blood and water cannot flow together — suggesting that diplomatic and sporting ties cannot coexist amidst conflict.

Harbhajan argued that with ongoing border tensions and unresolved issues, engaging in a cricket match would send the wrong message. “The nation always comes first. Cricket can wait,” he added, urging the cricketing fraternity to respect the sacrifices of security personnel and place national duty above all.

The India vs Pakistan encounter is scheduled for September 14, with the Asia Cup final set to take place on September 28. Whether this match proceeds as planned remains uncertain amid rising public sentiment and political considerations.
