In a significant display of valor, the Indian government announced a slate of gallantry awards this Independence Day, honoring defence personnel for their exceptional service during Operation Sindoor and related operations against Pakistan. Among the recipients, top Indian Air Force (IAF) officers, fighter pilots, and S‑400 air defence system operators were recognized for their courage and strategic precision in safeguarding national security.
Specifically, three senior naval officers received prestigious honours: Vice Admiral S.J. Singh was awarded the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti received the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Vice Admiral A.N. Pramod was conferred with the Yudh Seva Medal. In the Air Force, 13 officers were recognized with the Yudh Seva Medal for their integral role in operational engagements, while 26 IAF personnel received the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry)—including fighter pilots and S‑400 operators who thwarted enemy attacks.
The Border Security Force (BSF) also saw commendations, with 16 BSF personnel being honoured for their extraordinary bravery, particularly in preventing infiltrations and neutralizing threats during the operation. Additionally, nine IAF officers were awarded the Vir Chakra, the nation’s third-highest military award for wartime gallantry, in recognition of their key roles in striking terrorist infrastructure and military targets during Operation Sindoor.
These awards reflect India’s deep appreciation for the heroism and professionalism exhibited across multiple service branches in the face of serious adversities during critical operations.
