MEA Rejects UK Parliamentary Report Alleging India’s Role in Transnational Repression

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday strongly dismissed allegations made in a UK parliamentary committee report, which accused India of engaging in transnational repression (TNR) activities in the United Kingdom. Calling the claims “baseless,” the MEA stated that they are rooted in unverified and dubious sources that are primarily associated with anti-India hostility.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal issued a statement asserting, “We categorically reject these baseless allegations. These claims stem from unverified sources, predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals with a documented history of anti-India hostility. The deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself.”

The UK Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR), in its report titled Transnational Repression in the UK (published on July 30, 2025), named India alongside Bahrain, China, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and others as nations allegedly involved in TNR on British soil. The report also accused these countries of the systematic misuse of international policing systems like Interpol to target dissidents.

Specifically, the report referenced Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a pro-Khalistan group banned in India and declared an unlawful organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The report claimed that India’s actions against SFJ supporters abroad were part of transnational repression efforts.

The JCHR report also stated that MI5’s state-threat investigations had increased by 48% since 2022, attributing this rise partly to foreign governments’ alleged use of threats, surveillance, and coercion against critics in the UK. However, the MEA stressed that India’s counterterrorism measures are legitimate and that attempts to link India with such allegations are “politically motivated.”
