Ben Stokes Criticized as a ‘Spoilsport’ After India Declines His Offer for a Draw in Manchester Test

England’s captain Ben Stokes is under significant scrutiny for his behavior during the concluding moments of the fourth Test against India in Manchester, following his contentious proposal to conclude the match early, which was decisively turned down by the Indian team.

The Test match, which witnessed India achieving a remarkable escape thanks to exceptional performances from Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill, has been marred by Stokes’ actions. With just 90 minutes remaining on Day 4 and the match seemingly heading towards a draw, Stokes approached the Indian batsmen, suggesting a handshake to end the game prematurely. However, both Jadeja and Sundar, who were close to reaching their centuries, declined — a decision that frustrated the England captain.

Sanjay Manjrekar Critiques Stokes
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has criticized Stokes, labeling him a “spoiled kid” for his attempt to halt play.

“He was somewhat of a spoilsport. Jadeja and Sundar had been batting for hours, and being on the verge of a hundred, they were unlikely to agree. This illustrates the frustration of the England team, which stems from the resilience displayed by this modern Indian batting lineup,” Manjrekar remarked on JioStar.

Debate Over Sportsmanship
This incident has ignited discussions regarding the spirit of the game, with fans and analysts questioning whether Stokes would have acted similarly if two English batsmen were nearing centuries. The stump microphone even captured intense exchanges between Stokes, Jadeja, and other Indian players.

To exacerbate the situation, England’s Harry Brook bowled what many referred to as “charity balls” — gentle deliveries that enabled Jadeja and Sundar to achieve their milestones, a gesture widely regarded as petty and unprofessional.

India’s steadfast batting performance was likened to the iconic Sydney Test of 2021, with numerous fans describing this draw as “almost a victory” given the situation. India had established a lead exceeding 100 runs with six wickets still in hand, which left England with minimal opportunity to secure a result.

Manjrekar remarked, “Would Stokes have reacted similarly if his batsmen were approaching personal milestones? I have my doubts. His frustration was evident, yet it was India’s resolve that provoked this response.”
