Kamal Haasan has taken the oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha in Tamil

Veteran actor-turned-politician and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader Kamal Haasan was officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, marking a significant milestone in his political career. Haasan, who arrived at the Parliament complex earlier that day, took his oath in Tamil, reflecting his deep cultural and linguistic heritage.

This marks Haasan’s first official role in Parliament since he founded MNM in 2018, and his entry into the Upper House occurs amidst a larger political realignment in Tamil Nadu. His nomination is largely viewed as a reward from the DMK for MNM’s support during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) won all 39 seats in the state. The nomination was officially announced shortly after MNM joined the SPA in March 2024, further solidifying the alliance ahead of the critical 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Haasan’s party had previously issued a statement confirming his swearing-in date: “We are pleased to inform you that Kamal Haasan will take the oath of office and assume his responsibilities in Parliament on July 25.” His induction not only brings star power but also an articulate voice to the Rajya Sabha, with political analysts expecting significant contributions on governance, policy reforms, and social justice.

Recognized for his advocacy on education, scientific thinking, and effective governance, Haasan is anticipated to introduce these themes into the national conversation. His inaugural speech in the Rajya Sabha is eagerly awaited and is expected to showcase a mix of intellect, activism, and a call for inclusive development.

MNM, which garnered approximately 4% of the vote share in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, made significant strides in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, although Haasan narrowly lost the Coimbatore South seat. The party chose to withdraw from the 2024 general elections and officially aligned with the DMK-led alliance earlier this year. With this strategic move, MNM is poised to contest the 2026 Assembly elections as part of the ruling coalition.

Haasan’s rise to Parliament is regarded as a significant political event, not only in Tamil Nadu but also on a national scale—indicating the convergence of cinema, social ideas, and public service into a compelling new narrative.
