A day after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his position as Vice President of India, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday, July 22. Jagdeep Dhankhar also serves as the ex-officio chairperson of Rajya Sabha.

“Shri Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, visited President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” tweeted the President of India. The reason for this visit has not been disclosed.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, aged 74, took office in August 2022, with a term set to last until August 2027. His unexpected resignation occurred on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.

“To prioritize health care and follow medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” he stated in his letter to the President.

Earlier today, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was presiding over the session, declared that the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has accepted Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation from the position of Vice President of India. Following Dhankhar’s resignation, Deputy Rajya Sabha Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh was observed leading the proceedings.

The Chair stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs has communicated, through its notification, the resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar under Article 67A of the Constitution, effective immediately.

This announcement was made just prior to the adjournment of the upper house of Parliament until 2:00 PM today.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to comment on Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation. He remarked, “Jagdeep Dhankhar has had numerous opportunities to serve our nation in various roles, including as the Vice President of India. I wish him good health.”
