Landslide has hits the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra route in Katra, J&K, in multiple injuries

Katra (J&K):  Intense rainfall in various regions of Jammu and Kashmir led to a landslide on the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra route in Katra early on Monday morning. The landslide took place around 8 am near the Banganga area, which serves as the starting point for the yatra, where numerous pony riders congregate along the old path, resulting in several pilgrims being trapped beneath the rubble and others sustaining injuries.

As per the information received, large rocks and debris suddenly cascaded down from the mountain in the Banganga area, situated on the traditional Yatra route from Katra to Bhawan, inciting panic among the travelers.

Rescue teams, comprising Pitthu carriers, Palki service providers, Shrine Board personnel, and police officers, acted promptly, successfully evacuating the pilgrims. A rescue operation was initiated immediately, and four trapped pilgrims were rescued and taken to the hospital.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the shelters constructed along the yatra path also suffered significant damage due to the landslide. Fortunately, the timely actions of the rescue teams averted a major disaster.

This segment of the trail is one of the oldest and most commonly utilized routes for pilgrims visiting the shrine, with thousands traversing it daily. Following the incident, access along the route has been temporarily halted. To date, the administration has not issued an official statement concerning the landslide.
