Donald Trump’s assertions on the ceasefire are ‘humiliating’ for the nation: Kharge in the Rajya Sabha

On Monday, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge described US President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions that he facilitated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor in May as “humiliating” for the nation, and he called on the government to clarify the matter.

Kharge, along with other members of the Congress party, also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond to their concerns regarding the Pahalgam terror attack and Trump’s statements about the ceasefire during Operation Sindoor.

The House experienced a brief adjournment due to uproar from the Opposition during Zero Hour, and Congress members staged a walkout when the Rajya Sabha reconvened for Question Hour at noon.

Kharge, together with several opposition members in the Rajya Sabha, submitted adjournment notices (under Rule 267) to initiate a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor after suspending the day’s scheduled business.

During Zero Hour, the Congress president advocated for a two-day debate on the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, alleged security failures, and foreign policy. “The prime minister should provide answers,” he insisted.

Recalling the Pahalgam terror attack that occurred on April 22, Kharge expressed regret that the terrorists responsible for the attack have yet to be apprehended or eliminated.

Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha has acknowledged that there was a security lapse in Pahalgam, he noted.

Kharge stated that all political parties had offered unconditional support to the government. “In this context, we seek to understand from the government what the complete situation is?” he remarked.

The senior Congress leader further mentioned that the chief of defence staff (CDS), the deputy army chief, and one of the senior defence attachés have made some disclosures regarding Operation Sindoor.

In addition to this, the government needs to clarify its position regarding the remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who has asserted not just once but 24 times that he was responsible for achieving the ceasefire. This is a source of embarrassment for the nation,” he stated.

In response to Kharge’s requests, the leader of the House and Union minister J.P. Nadda confirmed that the government is open to discussing all matters concerning Operation Sindoor.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar also promised the protesting Opposition MPs that he would facilitate a comprehensive discussion on the topic for as long as the members desire.

Dhankhar mentioned that he would engage in discussions with leaders from various parties, as he temporarily adjourned the House proceedings until 12 noon amidst the uproar from the Opposition benches.

Operation Sindoor, which commenced on 7 May 2025, following the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 innocent civilians, initiated a coordinated, tri-services response characterized by precision, professionalism, and intent.

Operation Sindoor was designed as a punitive and targeted initiative aimed at dismantling the terror infrastructure along the Line of Control and further within Pakistan.

A ceasefire was declared on 10 May.
