A deeply disturbing incident of honor killing has emerged from Pakistan’s Balochistan province, where a woman was brutally shot dead by her brother for marrying a man of her choice, against the family’s wishes. The heinous act, which reportedly also involved the killing of the woman’s husband, has shocked the nation and sparked widespread outrage on social media.
The gruesome killing was captured on video, which has since gone viral. The footage shows the woman being shot at point-blank range by her brother in a deserted area, surrounded by over 20 men and several vehicles. The presence of so many onlookers has further intensified public anger, as no one attempted to intervene.
The video has prompted strong condemnation from human rights activists and religious scholars alike. Syed Adnan Kakakhail, a well-known Pakistani Sunni Muslim scholar, expressed his disgust on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“A video has gone viral showing a married couple being brutally killed by firing in front of a public gathering for entering into a love marriage. The condemnation of this savage, cruel, and chilling murder and this ignorant mindset cannot be strong enough. Such killings in the name of honor are in no way permissible in religion and sharia.”
He also demanded that the tribal council responsible for this barbaric act be held accountable, urging for strictest legal action against everyone involved.
As of now, the identities of the victims remain unknown, and authorities have not confirmed when exactly the incident occurred. Despite the lack of official details, the incident has reignited debate over the rampant issue of honor killings in Pakistan, particularly in rural and tribal regions where parallel justice systems still prevail.
The chilling nature of the video and the public execution-style killing have fueled calls for urgent legal reforms, greater protection for women, and stronger enforcement of laws against honor-based violence.
