A tragic accident struck Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, on Saturday afternoon as a tourist boat capsized during a sudden thunderstorm, killing 34 people and leaving 8 missing, local media reported.
The Wonder Sea boat, carrying 48 Vietnamese passengers and 5 crew members, overturned due to powerful winds. Most passengers were tourists from Hanoi, including around 20 children.
Rescue workers saved 11 people, including a 14-year-old boy found alive four hours later inside the overturned hull. Bodies of the deceased were found near the capsizing site.
Initially, officials said 12 were rescued, but the count was revised to 11. The boat flipped suddenly under stormy weather, catching all aboard off guard.
A tropical storm, Wipha, is moving toward the region and may hit northern Vietnam, including Ha Long Bay, in the coming days, according to the national weather service.
Authorities continue to search for the missing as weather conditions remain dangerous.
