Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to undertake an important two-nation tour to the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to 26, with the goal of strengthening India’s diplomatic relations through crucial trade agreements and political interactions.

The initial part of Prime Minister Modi’s trip will take him to the United Kingdom on July 23-24, where he is scheduled to sign the pivotal India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

This agreement is anticipated to affect 99 percent of Indian exports to the UK by lowering tariffs, thus facilitating British exports like whisky and cars to India. This milestone follows three years of intensive negotiations aimed at improving market access and establishing a more favorable trading landscape for both countries.

The India-UK FTA is projected to significantly expand the bilateral trade portfolio and enhance security cooperation between the two nations. By reducing trade barriers, both countries aspire to forge a more comprehensive economic partnership, strengthening their strategic and economic ties.

On July 25-26, the Prime Minister will head to the Maldives, where he will serve as the Chief Guest at the 60th National Day celebrations. This visit, under the Mohamed Muizzu Government, is particularly significant as it marks the first since the recent tensions in the relationship stemming from the “India Out” campaign, initiated by certain current Maldivian leaders.

The visit represents a renewed commitment to fortifying bilateral relations under new political leadership, focusing on promoting goodwill and collaboration.

Prime Minister Modi’s attendance is anticipated to reset and enhance India-Maldives relations, fostering goodwill and mutual cooperation. This trip is viewed as a chance to address existing concerns and establish a more solid partnership. PM Modi’s previous visit to the Maldives occurred in June 2019.

The Maldivian President, Mohamed Muizzu, who visited India in October 2024, has expressed a desire to repair relations and promote joint initiatives.
