At least 30 people were injured after a car plowed into a crowd outside a nightclub on Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, early Friday morning. The crowd was waiting to enter Vermont Hollywood, a nightclub hosting a reggae and hip-hop night.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the driver was found inside the crashed vehicle with a gunshot wound and taken to a hospital. It remains unclear if the shooting occurred before or after the car crash. Police have launched a full investigation into the incident.
LAFD’s Capt. Adam Van Gerpen confirmed the victims were standing in line near a taco cart and valet stand when the car, a Nissan Versa, struck them. “The valet podium and taco truck were taken out, and a large number of people were impacted,” he said.
Seven people were transported in critical condition, six in serious condition, and ten with moderate injuries. Seven others declined transport after being treated at the scene. In total, 124 fire personnel responded.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos at the scene. Maria Medrano, who was operating a food cart nearby, said a fight broke out moments before the crash. “The car stopped when it hit our hot dog stand. If not, we wouldn’t be alive,” she said from the hospital. Medrano also said she heard what sounded like gunfire following the collision.
Authorities are searching for a male suspect reportedly seen carrying a silver revolver and wearing a blue jersey. Witnesses say several patrons rushed out from the club to help the injured before emergency responders arrived.
Videos from the scene posted on social media show the aftermath, with people lying on the ground and bystanders screaming for help. LAPD has not released the identity or condition of the driver as the investigation continues.
“This is going to be a major investigation,” Van Gerpen confirmed, noting the scale of the response and number of victims.
