Last year, the Pune police requested that the accused be tried as an adult, arguing that he committed a “heinous” crime, as not only did he cause the deaths of two people, but there were also attempts to manipulate the evidence.

On Tuesday, July 15, the Juvenile Justice Board dismissed the police’s request to classify the accused boy as an adult, according to the defense attorney.

The accused teenager was granted bail just hours after the incident on May 19 last year.

The lenient bail conditions, which included requiring the minor to compose a 300-word essay on road safety, sparked a nationwide outcry, leading to his placement in an observation home in Pune city three days later.

On June 25, 2024, the Bombay High Court ordered the immediate release of the boy, stating that the Juvenile Justice Board’s decision to remand him to an observation home was unlawful and that juvenile laws must be fully enforced.
