Court has ordered the remand of the IIM-Calcutta rape suspect to police custody until July 19

A student from the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM) has been accused of raping a female student within the hostel of the business school. He was presented at a city court in Kolkata, West Bengal, on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

Kolkata: On Saturday, a court in the city placed a student of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta under police custody until July 19, following allegations of rape against a woman on campus. The arrest was made based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the woman at the Haridevpur police station.

After considering arguments from both sides, the additional chief judicial magistrate at Alipore court approved the police remand for the accused until July 19.

The woman, who works as a clinical psychologist, reported in her FIR that the accused invited her to the hostel for a counseling session, where she claims he raped her.

Rape reported from IIM-Calcutta weeks after law college incident. The prosecution’s attorney requested that the accused remain in police custody until July 25 for further investigation and questioning.

The defense attorney argued in court that IIM-Calcutta, located in Joka on the southern outskirts of Kolkata, is a secure environment with controlled access, requiring individuals to register their names and present identification to enter the campus. He suggested that there may be inconsistencies in the allegations against the student.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a reported gang rape of a student at a law college in Kolkata, occurring nearly two weeks prior.
