The Delhi BJP takes part in the symbolic Pandharpur Yatra to honor an 800-year-old tradition

Celebrating a long-standing tradition steeped in devotion and community spirit, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party President Virendraa Sachdeva participated alongside hundreds of attendees in the fifth symbolic Pandharpur Yatra held in the national capital.

The event reflects the annual Pandharpur Wari in Maharashtra, one of India’s most renowned pilgrimages dedicated to Lord Vitthal. Speaking to ANI during the event, Sachdeva remarked, “This is the Pandharpur yatra that takes place throughout Maharashtra with immense excitement and devotion. This tradition, which is 800 years old, was initiated by Sant Gyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram.

” He further stated, “This marks our 5th Yatra in Delhi. We have been consistently working to organize such Yatras in Delhi to encourage participation from everyone. We celebrate this Yatra of Vitthal with great enthusiasm and faith.” The Pandharpur Wari, also referred to as the Pandharpur Yatra, is a significant Hindu pilgrimage that unites thousands of devotees, known as Warkaris. Each year, they traverse approximately 250 kilometers to reach the sacred town of Pandharpur in Maharashtra.

Held in reverence of Lord Vitthal, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, and his consort Rukmini, the Wari has been observed for centuries. It is closely linked to the teachings and lives of esteemed saints like Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, who are credited with establishing and popularizing this tradition.

Grand processions, known as Palkhis, commence from the towns of Dehu and Alandi—birthplaces of Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar. These processions transport the sacred footwear (padukas) of the saints and are followed by thousands of devotees.

This year, the Palkhi of Sant Tukaram began its journey from Dehu on June 18, 2025, while the Palkhi of Sant Dnyaneshwar set off from Alandi on June 19, 2025. The pilgrimage concludes in Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi, which is observed on July 6, 2025.

During the Wari, followers engage in singing traditional devotional songs known as abhangas, perform kirtans, and recite the name of Lord Vitthal.
