A military doctor assists in the delivery of a baby at a train station

Jhansi: A hair clip and a pocket knife were utilized as tools during the urgent delivery of a baby girl — right on the platform.

The procedure, performed by a young army doctor with limited resources, ensured the safe arrival of the child, leaving onlookers astonished and the new parents overwhelmed.

As reported by Manoj Kumar Singh, the Public Relations Officer for North Central Railway’s Jhansi Division, a pregnant woman traveling on the Panvel- Gorakhpur Express experienced intense labor pains and was disembarked at Jhansi station on Saturday afternoon.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, a female ticket-checking staff member and an army officer nearby quickly took action to assist the woman.

Acting on instinct, he intervened and, with the support of railway personnel, opted to help the woman deliver her baby right on the platform.

“With no access to a proper operating room, I had to depend on the tools I had with me,” Major Bachwala recounted to PTI.

“To clamp the umbilical cord, I used a hair clip. A pocket knife was used to cut it after confirming the baby was stable. The mother and child were in a critical state, and every second was crucial.” He further explained that the woman had collapsed from severe labor pains near the lift area when he stepped in.

“There was no time to lose. We set up a makeshift delivery area and ensured basic hygiene with the supplies we had. It felt like divine intervention that I was there at that moment,” he added.

After the delivery, both mother and baby were transported to a local hospital by ambulance, with railway staff assisting in the arrangements.

Doctors later confirmed that both were in stable condition. Remarkably, after successfully managing the emergency, Major Bachwala boarded his train to Hyderabad on schedule. “As doctors, we must always be ready for emergencies, even while in transit. I feel blessed to have been able to help save two lives,” he stated.
