Big setback for HDFC Bank’s CEO as the Supreme Court refuses to grant protection from arrest in Lilavati Trust case

In a significant blow to HDFC Bank’s Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, the Supreme Court on Friday, July 4, refused to provide him with any relief regarding an FIR for cheating and fraud that was filed against him based on a complaint from the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which operates the well-known Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.

The Supreme Court declined to offer him temporary protection from arrest. The highest court expressed its expectation that the Bombay High Court will address the issue on July 14.

“We are not inclined to consider the issue. We will not focus on the merits. If the matter is not addressed on the 14th, you may return. We hope and trust that the high court will take up the matter on the scheduled date,” stated a bench consisting of justices P S Narasimha and R Mahadevan.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Jagdishan, argued that the bank has been involved in a private dispute.
