On Wednesday, Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to six months in prison by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for contempt of court, as reported by local media.
The sentence was handed down by a three-member panel of the International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. Additionally, Shakil Akand Bulbul from Gobindaganj in Gaibandha received a two-month prison sentence.
This is the first time the ousted Awami League leader has faced sentencing since she left her position and fled the country 11 months ago.
Sheikh Hasina, who was in power for nearly 16 years until her regime was overthrown in a student-led protest on August 5 last year, which forced her to escape to India, has been accused of mass killings during the uprising and of enforced disappearances in the tribunal.
